Nico

Ga_Aq_Nico[2009]

This is Nico. Nico is one of three Beluga whales at the Georgia Aquarium. He lives with two other female Belugas. Nico is a flirt and he loves to watch the people who visit the aquarium. On the afternoon I took this photo I was, surprisingly, the only person at the exhibit. Nico would swim back and forth across the front of the exhibit and right up to the second level where I stood. If I moved, he moved with me.

I suppose this flirtatious nature explains the frisky activities between he and one of the female Belugas. The aquarium is hoping there might be a baby Beluga coming soon!

The One and Only

The_Big_Chicken[2009]

While not in Atlanta proper, this KFC is one of the most well-known places in the Metro Atlanta area. This is the Big Chicken! The 56 foot chicken was designed by a Georgia Tech architecture student and built in 1956. It was nearly torn down after wind damage in the early 90s. However, public outcry resulted in it being rebuilt, including the moving beak (it opens and closes) and eyes (they go around in circles).

Whales on the Wall

It was painted by Wyland who is known for painting ocean murals all across the world. He currently holds the world record for largest mural.

Overhead View

ADP_GA_Aq_Ocean_Voyager[2009]

This is the view atop the Ocean Voyager tank. Here, you're seeing all but about 1/3 of the tank which is off to my right. The habitat dimensions are 284’ long x 126’ wide x 30’ deep at its largest points. It's referred to as the one ocean tank because it houses species that you'd mostly likely not find together, and is meant to represent the fact that our oceans are all one big ocean.

The Big Tank

ADP_Ocean_Voyager[2009]

This is a view of the Ocean Voyager Habitat at the Georgia Aquarium. This habitat is the largest habitat of its kind in the world and is built to represent the open ocean. It holds 6.3 million gallons of water and was specifically created to house whale sharks. The aquarium currently has four whale sharks on display (you can see one in the photo, top right) and they work alongside several research organizations to study them. Alongside the whale sharks are numerous other species, most of which, are rescues.
