Last night I went with a friend to 4th of July party. The super sweet hostess lives in a building with a rooftop deck overlooking downtown Atlanta. We had a great view of the fireworks from Centennial Olympic Park.

Nico

This is Nico. Nico is one of three Beluga whales at the Georgia Aquarium. He lives with two other female Belugas. Nico is a flirt and he loves to watch the people who visit the aquarium. On the afternoon I took this photo I was, surprisingly, the only person at the exhibit. Nico would swim back and forth across the front of the exhibit and right up to the second level where I stood. If I moved, he moved with me.

I suppose this flirtatious nature explains the frisky activities between he and one of the female Belugas. The aquarium is hoping there might be a baby Beluga coming soon!

Special Theme Day: Iran Protests

The City Daily Photo Blog community chose today as a special theme day to show support for the ongoing Iranian protests.

There were a number of suggestions as to how we, as individual CDP bloggers, could choose to participate.

I chose to select photos which did not show the violence that is currently taking place there, but which show the courage and determination of the protesters.

A recent letter of support by Peter Hallward of Middlesex University in the UK, and signed by a number of fellow scholars, has a very good statement:

. . . a government which claims to represent the will of its people can only do so if it respects the most basic preconditions for the determination of such a will: the freedom of the people to assemble, unhindered, as an inclusive collective force; the capacity of the people, without restrictions on debate or access to information, to deliberate, decide and implement a shared course of action.

My thoughts and prayers are with those courageous enough to stand up for their beliefs in the face of such violence and oppression.

Best Gas Price Around

Sadly, this was in the early 1950s. This old gas pump was used in an old Roswell gas station and auto shop. It's now been refurbished and sits in the pizza joint that occupies the old shop. Hard to believe the price is $.25 per gallon!

Swan House

This home is one of Atlanta's most photographed homes. The Swan House was built in 1928 for the Edward H. Inman family. The home was designed by Atlanta architect Philip Trammell Shutze. After the death of Mrs. Inman, the home and its ground were purchased by the Atlanta Historical Society.

This old Union Pacific rail car is on display at the Southeastern Railway Museum, just north of Atlanta. The museum has several different types of old rail cars displayed across its 30 acre area.

The One and Only

While not in Atlanta proper, this KFC is one of the most well-known places in the Metro Atlanta area. This is the Big Chicken! The 56 foot chicken was designed by a Georgia Tech architecture student and built in 1956. It was nearly torn down after wind damage in the early 90s. However, public outcry resulted in it being rebuilt, including the moving beak (it opens and closes) and eyes (they go around in circles).

This bridge is located on the Emory University campus. The day I visited was rainy off and on throughout the day. When I headed back to my car, I cam across this large puddle, reflecting the trees and the sky.

Ostrakon

This is an ostrakon made of white limestone. These were used by artists for sketches and layouts for decorations within Egyptian tombs. This is a depiction of Osiris, believed to be a draft of a representation that decorated the tomb of Ramesses IV. (So sayeth the information plaque.)

This is the Callanwolde Fine Arts Center. The house was the home for the Candler family, specifically the son of Asa Candler. Asa Candler was the founder of the Coca-Cola Company. The estate was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted who also designed Central Park in New York City. The home was designed by Designed by Henry Hornbostel. The center holds classes, performances and exhibitions throughout the year.

I recently explored Emory University's Michael C. Carlos Museum. The museum has large collections Classical, Ancient Egyptian, Near Eastern, Ancient American, African, and Asian art. They also have a large collection of works on paper.

This piece is a portion of a carved Roman relief. I loved the little carved flower.

This is a light fixture hanging in Atlanta's Vortex Bar & Grill. The Vortex is a really good burger joint in Midtown, with another location in Little Five Points. It's a bit rough on the edges (i.e. closer to a dive bar), but the food is great and the atmosphere is lots of fun!

One Wild and Wacky Parade

One thing I love about living in Atlanta is the great festivals that occur throughout the year. My favorite festival by far is the Inman Park Festival. Inman Park is a beautiful neighborhood in downtown Atlanta with gorgeous architecture, great restaurants and shops, and very fun residents. Each year the Inman Park Festival brings great artists and musicians from around the country, along with one fun parade.

The festival's parade is full of quirky bands and floats and is a huge draw for the festival itself. This is the drum major for the Seed & Feed Marching Band. Every single one of their band members is dressed just as wild and wacky as she is!

When the Georgia Aquarium was being built in Atlanta several years ago this large mural was painted on the side of the Underground Atlanta parking garage to promote it. It was painted by Wyland who is known for painting ocean murals all across the world. He currently holds the world record for largest mural.

More Moore

There are currently two sculptures of the "Moore in America" exhibition in place. I couldn't find the name of this sculpture, but through searching I believe it is "Large Two Forms."

I plan to visit the exhibition once it opens, so I'll see if I'm right!

Exhibition Prep

Every year the Atlanta Botanical Garden hosts an exhibition within the garden. This year, the ABG is presenting "Moore in America" consisting of 20 sculpted works by Henry Moore. This is to be the largest outdoor exhibition of Moore's sculptures ever presented. It's scheduled to run from May through October.

This is one of the sculptures being prepped for display in the garden. I suspect this is some sort of multi-sculptured skeleton, as a hand written sign on it said "leg" and the large crate next to it said "head."

Reflections

I really liked the reflections of the clouds on this building. This is the Bank of Atlanta in Midtown. At the right time of day, with the sun setting across town, it's especially pretty.

How to Make a Tropical Reef

This is a man-made tropical reef at the Georgia Aquarium. The aquarium grows their own coral and uses an enormous filtration system. Interestingly, all the tanks at the aquarium are filtered every hour! That's nearly 8 million gallons every hour.

This is the grave of Martin Luther King, Jr. and his wife Coretta Scott King. Dr. King was born in Atlanta, and the King Center has wonderful exhibits detailing his life.

I found this sign in the basement of a vintage furniture store in the Virginia Highlands area of town. The store has really great vintage furniture and antiques, specializing in the more retro types of items. The store is called Highland Row Antiques & Vintage Furniture, if you're ever in the neighborhood.

This old Krispy Kreme on Ponce De Leon in Midtown still has the fun, old neon sign. It looks neat at night, but not so much on a sunny day. The cloudy sky certainly helped me here. I'm happy I was able to get a decent shot during the day.
