Surprise Within Atlanta

ADP_Lullwater_View[2009]

Another of several photos I took at Atlanta's Lullwater Park. I'd heard the park was quiet and peaceful. However, I had no idea it would be such a pretty and peaceful place. Lullwater Park is also the location where the President of Emory University lives. I'm sure when the weather is nice it's a crowded place. When I was there recently, I might have seen ten people total!

View From Within

ADP_Lullwater_Tower[2009]

This photo was taken from within the old tower which I posted yesterday. The lighting makes it difficult to get much detail in the tower, but it's a neat perspective.

Old Stone Tower

ADP_Tower_Lullwater[2009]

This is what is left of an old mill tower which I believe was used by Emory University. This tower sits beside the upper falls within Lullwater Park. It's a neat part of the park to explore. The tower itself is open, and now home to a bit of Latin graffiti. This recent trip to Lullwater was my first, but I look forward to visiting it again during the Spring or Summer when the area is more lush.

ADP_Atlanta_Fair[2009]

Every year the Atlanta Fair sets up a few blocks from Turner Field. It has many of the typical fair rides and games. This is its single ferris wheel. They also have a double ferris wheel. I haven't made it into the actual fair just yet, but plan to. This photo was taken while driving by the fair.

Handcarved

ADP_BAPS_Temple_Side[2009]

This is the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir Hindu Temple. More than 1,300 craftsmen and 900 volunteers worked on building the temple. They used more than 4,500 tons of Italian Carrara marble, 4,300 tons of Turkish limestone, and 3,500 tons of Indian pink sandstone. The stone was quarried and shipped to the craftsmen in India, and then shipped to the U.S.

Football!

ADP_Falcons_TC[2008]

Every year the Atlanta Falcons open up their training camp to the public. You can watch them run through drills and plays. Afterwards, several of the players will stick around for a few minutes and sign autographs. It's always very hot, but a lot of fun.

This picture is of Michael Koenen punting the football to receivers.

Overhead View

ADP_GA_Aq_Ocean_Voyager[2009]

This is the view atop the Ocean Voyager tank. Here, you're seeing all but about 1/3 of the tank which is off to my right. The habitat dimensions are 284’ long x 126’ wide x 30’ deep at its largest points. It's referred to as the one ocean tank because it houses species that you'd mostly likely not find together, and is meant to represent the fact that our oceans are all one big ocean.

The Big Tank

ADP_Ocean_Voyager[2009]

This is a view of the Ocean Voyager Habitat at the Georgia Aquarium. This habitat is the largest habitat of its kind in the world and is built to represent the open ocean. It holds 6.3 million gallons of water and was specifically created to house whale sharks. The aquarium currently has four whale sharks on display (you can see one in the photo, top right) and they work alongside several research organizations to study them. Alongside the whale sharks are numerous other species, most of which, are rescues.
